It’s been quite while since my last post and just realized that, my last post was about the very same thing: Looking for PHP gurus.

- Living in or around Montreal – No relocation or telecommute for now, sorry…
- A PHP and Javascript Guru with at least 3+ years of hands on experience

- Looking for a real technical challenge on a high traffic e-commerce website – I’m talking about 100M+ PV

I’ve just received news from Mikael Johansson that the new builds of pecl/memcache 2.2.4 stable and 3.0.2 beta is out with memcache.php

memcache.php flushes servers

Your good comments from all over the world about memcache.php is amazing. Thank you all!

I’ve recently received a contribution from Michael Gauthier. I took the liberty to tweak a bit and now memcache.php can flush individual server (no flush all servers yet).

File is now updated and you can get it from here.

PS: I didn’t receive any feedback from pecl guys about my previous update. I’ll post this to them again. I’ll announce when this version is in pecl/memcache CVS.

I’m receiving great comments from everyone since I’ve posted my memcache.php script. Thank you everyone.
I’ve just finished updating the memcache.php to support key deletion.
File is now updated and you can get it from here.
It’ll be updated on the cvs of pecl/memcache soon.

I’m very happy to announce that memcache.php is commited to the CVS of pecl/memcache. Woot woot!

I’ll be maintaining the code through the time as well. Hope you guys/gals find it useful.

PS: I’m planning to add more functionality to the memcache.php in the coming days. Candidates:

Delete/Expire a cached value
Move stuff from server to server

Let me know if you have any other ideas.

memcache.php goes PECL

After the suggestion by Lukas, I’ve contacted PECL/memcache authors Antony Dovgal and Mikael Johansson. Mikael sent me a reply accepting my submission.
I’m looking forward to the day that memcache.php will appear in the pecl/memcache distribution.
I’ll keep you posted.

Update on memcache.php:

Small bug fixed on parsing the bucket Ids.
Distribution license is now PHP license.

memcache.php stats like apc.php

For a long time I was looking for a nice web interface like the apc.php (comes with the apc’s source) that displays whole nine yards of stats. The only good tool is memcache-tool from the danga guys. It’s quite complete but I guess I’m too lazy to go on the command line.

Anyways, I decided to ~~rip~~ write my own. Totally based on the original apc.php (I even recycled some functions) and apart from completeness, here is a memcache.php that you can get stats and dump from multiple memcache servers.

As usual, this piece of software comes with the warnings:
- Don’t expect something complete, might have bugs and security problems etc.
- Do not install on a prod environment unless you’re sure!
- Feel free to add stuff to it, I’ll put it to google code or sf.net soon.
- Feel free to request features. (no I’m not planning a backup tool , there is memcache-tool for that)
- Enjoy!

Update: Small parse error is fixed

oci_bind_by_name maxlength is not so optional

If you think that the maxlength parameter in the documentation of oci_bind_by_name is optional, see this example and think again.
Lets say you have your column names in an array already and you want to bind them in a loop smartly.

$cols = array('a','b','c'); $data = array( array('a'=>1,'b'=>2,'c'=>3), array('a'=>4,'b'=>5,'c'=>6), ); $q = "INSERT INTO table_a (a,b,c) VALUES (:a,:b,:c)"; $stmt = oci_parse($db, $q); foreach ($cols as $key) { oci_bind_by_name($stmt, ':'.$key, $$key); // < << optional length } // then you want to loop through the data and execute the statment. foreach($data as $row){ extract($row); oci_execute($stmt, OCI_DEFAULT); } oci_free_statement($stmt); oci_commit($db); oci_close($db);
actually this would return you a nice obscure

Warning: oci_execute(): ORA-01461: can bind a LONG value only for insert into a LONG column in ...

even if you don't have any LONG value in the col types.
Just add a large enough number to oci_bind_by_name line:
oci_bind_by_name($stmt, ':'.$key, $$key,200)

If you know the data type length for each column it’s better to put that. In my case I wouldn’t know. So I entered the max of the max col length.

PS: I also tried using $row[$key] instead of a lame $$key. However it didn’t work. I guess it has something to do with the $key changing all at each iteration.

It was good 2 days at PHP Quebec Conf here in Montreal.

A lot of great sessions!!!!
My highlights:
- Great session by Eli White – High Performance PHP & MySQL.
- Really nice 2 sessions by Marc Wandschneider (The I18N and memcached sessions)
Some sessions I’ve attended were really really bad. I’m not going to name names
But overall, I guess it was worth taking 2 days from work and going to the php conf.

Here is the part about Sun and PHP:

At the end of the conferance, there was a small QA session with the conferance speakers. At the begining everyone was shy to ask questions. So some asked phunny questions like, “What’s the next big thing you’d be developing in PHP 6? Is it PDO2?” things like that. Everybody started laughing and I’ve (tried) to make a joking reference to “Sun buying MySQL” and asked:

Is Sun going to buy PHP too?

All of a sudden all the speakers, which were lauging to the previous joke, stopped lauging. All the heads turned to me, and someone from speakers asked:

How?

And actually they took the question seriously, ignoring the fact that I was half lauging when I was asking the question. All of a sudden their faces were stunned. I guess it was the one of the Core developers of PHP said, “They can buy me”. It was funny and this released the tension in the room a bit.

Hey guys, hold it! It was just a joke. Why were they that sensitive to the subject? I don’t know?
